In this short article I will share my inside knowledge to help you manage massive electricity price rises with solar and batteries.

Thanks for your time and attention. Without beating around the bush:

The Electricity market is broken. Large coal and gas interests have dominated energy policy for decades and lobbied Government to create certainty of profit, enshrined by network operation rules that favour large generators with retail interests.

Despite Australia having vast reserves of coal and gas, failure to regulate domestic pricing means that producers get to sell our coal and gas back to us at the inflated overseas market price. Only Western Australia has domestic reserve policies in place and their electricity is forecast to rise by 2% next year rather than the 56% forecast for the Eastern states.

The wholesale price of electricity rose 140% in the last year. Billions of dollars are flowing from users to producers, who are free to “game the market”, forcing up energy costs through manipulation of wholesale energy prices.

Governments are helpless to derail this money train, compromised by hundreds of millions of dollars in political donations over decades. Unfortunately, it looks like this is going to get much worse before it gets better. Electricity prices rose by 18% in July 2022. The Federal budget is factoring another 56% increase in energy prices to consumers in 2023!

Why solar panels alone are not enough to protect you?

Solar power is produced during daylight hours and, 2/3 of the time, you will be buying power from the grid. When we could sell power back to the grid for 21 cents per kWh, you could sell twice as much as you used and break even.

Feed in Tariffs (FIT) have crashed to 5-12 cents per kWh and, with export limits restricting households to a maximum of 5 kW at any time, you can no longer make enough money to cover your usage and the daily network supply charges. Adding solar batteries to any solar system is essential to zero your electricity bill. Due to outrageously high prices, batteries are now worthwhile, with payback periods for investment in solar and batteries averaging 5-7 years for most households.

Which solar batteries are more affordable and last longer?

The independent Australian Battery Test Centre in Canberra has conducted testing on most brands of solar batteries available. The results are astounding.

Of the 26 batteries tested, only two were fault-free and operated as it should have from the beginning to the end of testing. Some leading brands like Tesla, LG, Alpha ESS, BYD and Sonnen, all developed faults and failed the test.

This battery retained 78% of it’s capacity after the equivalent of 7.8 years of testing and was on track to be at around 70% after 10 years. Pylontech batteries are still available in Australia and are the only brand 888 Solar Tek recommends and supplies.

If you have existing solar and most of the power is being sold to the grid at a low price, and you are still receiving a large bill, then you can be certain that solar batteries will be a good investment for you.

Time is on your side. Once you have paid for the batteries, every kWh of free solar energy stored will never be subject to a price rise. Consider you are buying your electricity for the next ten years in advance at a fraction of the market price. The more electricity prices escalate, the better your invest return.

When I use a calculator for my clients which simulates projected rises in electricity prices and models their electricity usage, I am finding most of the results are showing a payback period of 4-7 years for solar and batteries.

In Norway in 2017, 52% of all new car sales were electric vehicles. Most people have an opinion that Electric cars do not have enough battery range and they will run out of power and get stranded. While this may have been true years ago, today’s EV’s have larger batteries and more and more fast charging stations are popping up at destinations throughout the country. Not many people have oil wells in their back yards, but any EV owner can have a free solar power station on their roof.

The NRMA has installed 42 EV fast chargers across regional NSW along most major highways including the Hume, Newell, Sturt and Oxley Highways, as well as the Mitchell, Pacific, Olympic and Great Western Highways. Meanwhile, the NSW Government has dedicated $171 mil towards establishing new fast charging stations over the next 4 years.

How do I feel about driving for free powered by sunshine? Do I always smile when I drive past petrol stations and see fuel over two buck a litre? Do I enjoy the quiet, constant power of my Nissan Leaf while cruising up the highway?

Yes, yes and bloody well yes!

I have been driving my EV around the Northern Rivers for over a year now and it is my preferred vehicle for any occasion, provided I can drive there with a full charge or have time to fast charge and get the extra kms I need. I still have my trusty Subaru Outback for heavy towing and getting dirty down tracks, but the Leaf is pretty awesome on most roads and driveways.

How to cope with range anxiety - Charging your EV in the Northern Rivers

I tend to use the Leaf on drives where I can get to destination and back again without having to charge. Until recently I had a Leaf with only a 24 kWh battery and the range was limited to 110 kms. It gets really freaky when it gets close to zero, so I try to stay in a zone where I have at least 25 kms left in the battery. That limits destinations to within about a ½ hour radius, so longer journeys could only happen if I stopped to charge along the way.

Fast chargers are the only way to go, unless you have a 4 hour to spare at a slow charger point. Most of the time a 15 minute charge from the NRMA Fast charge at the Farm at Ewingsdale was enough to get me home to Federal. It is free to use, and provided there is not a couple of Teslas doing an extended lunch at Three Blue Ducks, it is an easy in and out. I also use the Fox Charge next to Maccas at Ballina, which is 40c per kWh using a phone app. The most it ever cost me was $6, which is better than $100 to fill the Outback with vile dinosaur blood at the servo. I am still waiting for the Lismore Council to finish their Solar Fast Charging station at Lismore, which will open up a lot more territory.

The NSW Government is spending $171 million over the next 4 years installing new chargers, so you can soon be confident to head out and get charged wherever you go.

Tips for Fledgelings

It is easy to get swelled up by the bravado of EV’s taking over the world, but heroic journeys are best left to seasoned explorers. Get used to how to charge at Fast chargers nearby, even when you don’t need to, just to learn the ropes before you venture into the wild unknown.

Plan your trips and have a backup plan in case the Fast charger is out of order or busy. Getting to your furthest remote oasis and finding that the well has dried up is enough to send even RAV4 camels insane.

I always carry a 10 amp charger that will plug into any power point so I can slow charge anywhere there is electricity. It tastes better than siphoned petrol and is great for out-of-range country drives when visiting friends or family. A BYO type 2 to type 1 charger cable is also handy for slower charge points.

Always allow for delays. I hardly ever have to wait, but there can be a queue at chargers and some cars can take literally hours to charge their massive batteries.

Charge your EV from solar at home

I don’t know anyone who has an oil well in their back yard but loads of people have solar energy to burn. Instead of getting peanuts selling excess power to the grid, storing it in an EV saves a heap more cash. With petrol prices rocketing like a wart in Ukraine and the increased maintenance cost of an oil burner car, I calculated I was saving the equivalent of 70 cents per kWh using my solar in the Leaf. That sure beats the 12 cents on offer from the coal barons running the electricity grid for selling back to the network. A third of your fuel cost is tax, so you can see how running free on sunshine makes natural sense.

In fact, using solar power to charge the EV is worth twice as much as using it at peak periods in your house . Don’t bother getting a solar battery on your home. Fill up an EV and drive for free instead.

How good is a Nissan Leaf?

The Leaf is an unbelievably reliable car. There is no clutch, gearbox, oil changes, fuel system, or heat generated. There is just a big electric motor that connects to the front wheels that either goes backwards or forwards. The batteries last for decades and the regenerative braking harvests power back to the battery so brake pads last four times longer.

If you avoid potholes, the maintenance for tyres, brakes and suspension is minimal and an annual service is usually enough to keep the Leaf happy and on the road.

Disadvantage of Lead Acid Batteries

When lead acid batteries fail in small off grid solar systems it can be catastrophic. No power for water pumps, lights or refrigeration. Lead acid batteries can die suddenly, particularly in winter when the colder temperatures cause the chemical process to slow down.

Lead acid batteries need to be fully charged all the time or they can die quickly when lead crystals build up on the internal plates. If they are left partially charged or don’t get full very often this can cause rapid deterioration. Lithium batteries do not suffer from this problem. They can be left fully discharged for weeks without affecting the battery capacity or life.

Old 24 Volt systems often need to be totally upgraded to work with most, new 48V Lithium batteries and this is very expensive, having to replace everything just because the batteries have failed.

New Pylontech 24V Lithium battery solution

Not anymore! Pylontech have a new 24V Lithium battery solution that can work with most existing inverters and solar panels. Each battery holds 2.5 kWh of usable power and upgrading is simple and easy.
