On the evening of July 8th, the Northern Rivers experienced blackouts affecting around 24,500 customers in Ballina, Lismore, and surrounding areas due to a supply shortage.


These events are caused by coal-fired power stations going offline suddenly, reducing available generation capacity. Load shedding events like this highlight the fragility of Australia’s largest electricity market as aging coal-fired power plants become more unreliable
